1. Sounds like you are hitting the server, but it is not finalizing the connection, which is usually due to a failure to create a secure tunnel
2. Depending on your VPN hardware, does your VPN on your PC require additional authentication methods, aka group authentications on top of your typical user authentication
3. The network may require asset tags for approved hardware to connect to the VPN, and if it is not approved, then it is dropping ur connection. Ex. Symantec Enforcement Agent is a perfect example of software/hardware network authentication methods
4. Missing a protocol
5. PPC device is not allowing more then necessary connections (socks)

I could continue to go on for an hour with possible problems. Do you have any error codes?

Since you are using your work PC, I am assuming you have a VPN client installed and pre-configured for your network access, ex. Cisco, Nortel, Inteligate ect. and they have special configurations depending on your network requirements. Just dont have enough details to give you a good solid final answer on the root cause.

Hope this helps to point you in the right direction
my work laptop uses the standard windows vpn client. my ppc does connect to the vpn properly as i can browse sites using the internal url. i just cannot connect to a share.

to re-iterate, i want to be able to open files stored on my work network while connected via a vpn with internet provided by wifi, evdo, etc. this is in case i do not want to bootup my laptop while i'm on the road..........
