I am not sure with sprint, but Verizon changed the codec used between cersions 1 and 2. It now uses a compressed audio codec (EVRC) that is not as good as "Voice 13K". To change this in Verizon I dialed ##778, entered my unlock code, and under CDMA settings changed EVRC Enabled to Disabled and the next three entries below to Voice 13k (Home Page", "Home Orig", "Roam Orig").
