The information is even available on the HTC site itself... Data and Voice utilize the same signal therefor you must end your data call to use the voice feature and vice versa.

Not sure about the customer support person to whom you spoke with but they may not have been clear in the fact when they stated "some phones do that some dont" the reference may have been actually meaning some type or styles of phones do that while others do not.

Not exactly sure as I have never tested it directly myself, but the information on HTC website itself states that you will recieve a message stating to end your call to connect to a data network (in reference to people tethering their phones for internet access for their PC's and laptops
)

Would love to know of a way myself to share the same data/voice signal simultaniously but unsure it can be done
