Windows Vista Ultimate & Business, XP Professional, Server 2000-2003-2008 so far are the only OS's that allow users to access them remotely.

Windows Vista Basic & Home Premium, XP Home Edition, ME, NT, and older...Do NOT allow you to control your computer remotely. Also MAC OSX 10.3+ Does NOT work with this as well.

That could be your problem right there...

I have two laptops with XP Pro and Vista Ultimate, I will try to give you guys a "How-To" guide to help you set up your computers and your phone for remote access.

So here it goes...

First and foremost, make sure your computer has remote desktop turned ON (Right Click My Computer - select Properties on XP Pro or Remote Settings on Vista Ultimate)
Click on the "Remote" tab and make sure "Allow Remote Connections..." are BOTH selected.... see pic below

Then you have to make sure that your Windows Firewall will allow Remote Desktop to access your computer. So go to Start - Control Panel - Security - Windows Firewall. Get into firewall settings and select the "Exceptions" tab. Make sure you have "Remote Administration, Remote Assistance, AND Remote Desktop" ALL Checked...see pic below

Don't forget that you will need either your Static IP or your DHCP IP of the computer you're trying access. Most likely you have a Dynamic IP automatically assigned by your router.

To find your IP address, open up Command Prompt (Start - Accessories - Command Prompt) or (Start - Run - Type cmd)

You'll get the DOS black screen up, type ipconfig and you'll get your computer's IPv4 IP Address. (Don't worry about IPv6, Subnet Mask, or Gateway Mask they are not needed) see pic below...

Attachment 14884

If your IP is Dynamic then it will start out with 192.168.X.X

Now on your phone open up the remote desktop application

Enter in the "Computer" Field the IP address of the computer you want to access. In my case I will enter 192.168.1.102

Then for "User Name" enter the name of your computer log on name. If you have XP Pro, then its the same name ontop of the Start Menu bar, for Vista its the name in the top right-hand corner in the start meu bar.

Then for "Password" enter the password you use to log into Windows. If you do not have one set up, you'll need to set one up in Control Panel - User Accounts - Add Password.

For "Domain" leave blank, this is only for people connected to a Domain network, usally a company or an organization. Most likely if this is your personal computer at home, then you are connected as a workgroup.

Hit "Connect"...if all done correctly it sould work!
thanks bud, i really appreciate the steps with the thumbnails! But i still can't get it to work!! You know what, because of your post, i realized that i do not have the "remote andministration" item to check... i only have the other 2...

i AM running XP Pro, so i SHOULD be good... anyway to get the remote admistration in there?
