I am running stock rom on my US Cellular HTC PPC6800 and have soft reset like 5 times not once lost my msgs/conversations. I am trying the iWindowsMobile Communication Suite and must say its AWESOME i love it. SMS-Chat, Winterface, FunContact & Zoomboard are all great. Not sure funcontact is huge improvement but i do like it. rest are running flawless on my phone.
So not sure its your Rom or not but im not having that issue. Hope that helps in some way.
