WiMax is the new wireless standard looking to replace and move way beyond current data networks. It's more like WiFi in how it'll blanket areas and be available to more devices than just your phone or wireless cards. Very fast speeds, major implications. Also, and I could be wrong, but I think the idea is to switch the actual phone service to it, as well, using the data network for VOIP of sorts. So instead of having a voice and data connection through your phone, it would be WiMax only, and voice and data would connect through it.
Your spot on although this is about 3yrs out before test market stuff even begins. Sprint has already said 4G will be out before WiMax. They had planned on using WiMax as their 4G however this changed over a year ago....
