You may be referring to uploading photos using MMS, or getting messages through SMS. But these are not through the mobile portal. They are a pain to use, and messages are often cut-off in the middle because they don't fit in SMS. Not to mention that even this limited functionality is not available to a large number of users (T-Mobile and Alltel in the US, for example).
There are two ways to upload pics from your phone. First you have to add mobile application to your Facebook account. Once you have that you can upload pics either by MMS or through email to mobile@facebook.com. I use email because I have Sprint Touch and don't have MMS. It works just fine.

I also get friend requests and check my wall through the m.facebook.com application.
