I don't know where you are pulling your info from but it was quite clear from internal Sprint sheets that it was slated for a 8/28 release and then a 9/2 release. Whether the email said that it was delayed before or after the 28th is totally irrelevant. It WAS at one point slated to be released on those dates.
As far as employees getting phones for people that they aren't supposed to get, you obviously must be oblivious to all the stuff employees do that they aren't "supposed to do". I've been the recipient myself for sure. All you need is to know someone who is high enough in the store to make it happen (Manager/assistant or good friends with them). Amazing stuff can happen.
