Hi all. replying to my own question and possibly RockmanNeo.
I downloaded
htctoucher pidgin s2u2 gfx and sample.zip from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?p=2325150 and simply saved over the gfx folder.
When I fired up s2u2 the lower and upper background shaded areas had disappeared. job done.
I have saved over the set of .png files with those customised by Spunks3. Simply saved over the files in the clock folder within gfx folder in order to get a smaller and more attractive font
