Could the storage card not be recognized at certain times? Maybe while the phone is off and push email is synchronized? I'm puzzled.

Yepp that is exactly the problem. If you have email being saved to memory card or applications that save cache, etc to storage card, when the ppc wakes up and doesnt see the storage card it will create a storage card folder. to fix the storage card2 problem, either do not save attachments to storage card or allow any apps to save to storage card by changing settings. or just simply remove storage card, del the existing storage card folder, and then reinsert storage card. works every time.
