That to me is extortion my friend. Some people in that line of work call is business but on my end, thats not what i call it.

What you do is certainly defensible and I would say it's ethical. Keeping a legitimately defective phone when they send you a replacement for $50 while keeping insurance intact the entire time seems reasonable to me.
