The COM OPEN error seems to have something to do with the data connection being connected before clicking "Start" in WModem. Try this:
1. Soft reset
2. Immediately after the OS boots (before it dials #777) bring up Wmodem
3. Click Start
4. Then plug in the USB cable to the PC
That should work. If it doesn't then you may need to do a hard reset on the phone.
