It probably would be easier to do this before activating the phone. As long as you follow the steps above, you wont "eff" it up. Once you get the bootloader successfully installed it is actually very difficult to eff it up. Just keep a <2GB SD Micro non-SDHC card around just in case (allows you to flash Radio and OS ROMS without activesync, just in case you do muck something up)
