The End Of My Apache Era - So long old friend
In November 2006, I bought two 6700s (the wife and me) for ~ $400 total, and eased back into the WinMo pool. I was limping along trying to make it work (remember the pre-AKU stock rom? Shudder...) and then stumbled on... ppcgeeks. Thanks to everyone here, we nursed those suckers for nearly 2 years, all the way to WM 6.0, long past any hope of support from Sprint/HTC.
Mine died for Christmas... Sprint swapped me for a Mogul refurb for $50. Unlike the 6700, they've been doing OK with the OS updates on the moguls so I'm still stock (WM6.1) and nicely tweaked... However, the wife was limping along on her aging 6700 until a trans-atlantic flight and some errant beer sent it off to a long-overdue grave.
We just got her a Touch - $100 as they are firesaleing them ahead of the new versions... (she never did use wifi or the keyboard... she prefers the larger bluetooth keyboard if she's gonna type) and I've finished bringing it up to 6.1/tweaking goodness...
So there you have it. My last 6700 is dead. So long, old friend!
(So I now have access to a mogul, touch, and tilt - the tilt's a work phone, which I used as my primary for a month in the UK - of the three, the tilt would be my fav, followed by the touch (I would miss wifi and the keyboard), with the mogul last only due to the tight memory situation there. The mogul's running better now on WM6.1, but it's silly to have to be so aware of ram when another 64mb makes all the badness go away...)
