The original SMS program never went anywhere--it's the messaging app in your phone's ROM. Unfortunately, installing Palm's app screws up a bunch of settings, which is why you will most likely need to hard reset to get it back. I'm sure it is technically possible to fully remove Palm SMS and restore the default messaging app, but to my knowledge no one has taken the time to figure out what all needs to be changed (most likely it's all registry changes).
So until someone does that, I think a hard reset it your only option for now.
