Activesync can be a nightmare. It still sounds like an issue with the connection to the PC, and not the ICS setup on the device itself. I doubt your problems relate to PDANet being installed though. One thing that often fixes a number of Activesync/WMDC related issues is disabling advanced networking in Start-->Settings-->Connections tab-->USB to PC (I think that's correct, going from memory).
