Actually, that's not true.

HTC did provide "software enhancements" to improve the graphics, along with WM6.1--but this has only been for "unbranded" (read non-AT&T) Tilts officially. And of course that can be ported to non-branded Tilts.

While the software enhancement are no drivers, they do significantly help with day to day activities on the device i.e. screen rotation.

Regardless, the success of these 3d drivers for regular activities probably won't be that successful and so far it's looking a bit unlikely that 2d will get done.

For alternatives? The 800w has both 2d and 3d hardware acceleration and of course the Diamond and Pro will too.
