It was the dialer. The problem is gone with an uninstall. To answer the question about why I want the data inactive is- It does drain the battery faster. To prove this just download the ABC power meter and see for yourself. The only time the data connection should be active is during an email check, an MMS download or internet activity. I am sure that there are other instances, but I don't intend to name them all, just some of the major ones. I want my data to connect when it needs to and disconnect when the work is done.
