Are you putting the phone into bootloader mode first?
If you don't, it won't work.
First, disable activesync on the pc by un-checking USB connections.
To go into bootloader, hold the power button and the record button down.
While holding the 2 buttons down, use the stylus to click the reset button. The screen will go dark, and say "Serial" at the top.
Sometimes when I do this, if I'm not holding the buttons down all the way, I end up resetting the phone instead, and have to try again after it boots up.
