QuickMenu is a good app to use for managing memory. you can easily check what programs are running and easily close ones you don want running anymore. it has a bunch of other features, and it barely needs any ram to run (156 kb on my 6800).

works on any rom ive run- which i think no2 makes the best. 5069k is what im on and i get around 26 mb free at boot. stays around 21-23 most of the day (this rom got me 28.xx mb at boot before i put on any apps)

i think its definitely worth trying out.
