activesync IS recognizing your device right? its just the rom update utility which does not.... right?
i believe unlocking will do the trick.... voids warranty tho, so if at some point you completely fry your phone, you're outta luck... but if its not COMPLETELY fried, you can relock it...
i'm not saying frying your phone WILL happen, but its always possible if you start flashing a bunch of roms and don't know what youre doing...
but your purpose of unlocking is to upgrade to an official sprint version which should not ruin your phone in ANY way.

Mine was already unlocked, as I upgraded to the leaked ROM a couple of days ago (great timing, right?) ActiveSync DOES recognize my phone, but disconnects right when I start the update - even though the "rainbow" screen says "USB." The status bar shows 0%, and immediately the phone soft-resets and the computer screen tells me I've experienced the error. What could be going on?
