From what I can tell, if you can connect to activesync using bluetooth on your laptop you can use pdanet through it. (the physical connection isn't the limiting factor) but if you're on XP, you need to use activesync as it provides the basic connection over which pdanet runs.
I will warn you that connected to activsync through bluetooth, the battery is going to not last very long and bluetooth is a lot slower than USB2.
