workaround... you can always goto settings/system/clock & alarms/more

check/enable "show the clock on the title bar in all programs"

then to check the battery level just tap the time at the top of the screen. it will show the time, date, and battery level in a pop-up window.

not as accurate as it only has increments of 25%
