I've had activesync issues too. I've got SP3 and a kitchen built 3.02 ROM. What happens is, I can get it to sync. Then I can't get it to sync again after multiple attempts UNTIL I kill Activesync on my Touch. Then when I connect it again, it will sync.
Soft reset would probably equal killing Activesync on the Touch so we're probably doing the same thing.
Not sure what the story is here - but Activesync has always been a steaming pile...
