I have run MSVC1.6 from my ext_rom without any performance or useability issues.
Don't forget, if you unlock and clear out the rom to use it for storage space or to install apps to, you will need to reload it with your base ext-rom files before you hard reset or you wont get any auto-install after hard reset.
