I don't believe that the law in any state requires you to have insurance for damage to your own car; just liability insurance to cover damage to other people's property and health. However, most leases and bank loans will require you to insure your own vehicle against loss or damage.

Bottom line, it is a personal decision whether you want to carry insurance on your own car (without a loan or lease requirement), your health, or your phone. It is not an inherently wrong decision either way. If you can afford and are willing to pay the possible costs without insurance, then no insurance could be a right choice for you. If you would rather spend a known amount that spreads the costs out over a period of time, then insurance could be a right choice for you. No reason to bash someone who made a different decision than you did or is in a different situation than you are. Just realize that your decision, whichever one you make, may look like the wrong one in hindsight.

And I am old enough to know that "It won't happen to me" is no protection.
