It's often when I leave GPSGate running and no GPS apps then I run a non COM app like Google Maps and it's just stuck. shutting everything down won't unwedge it.

Instead of soft-resetting, try the new trick of putting your phone in flight mode then taking it off of flight mode (basically rebooting the radio without a soft-reset). I haven't tried that yet, but it should be quicker than a soft reset.
