Since they have agreed to swap the phone once they get a replacement in, do you have any suggestions as to what I could try? I presume that the 2.01 SPL came out of the Alltell ROM but it won't flash either (wrong device id).

Not sure if it's possible to SuperCID your phone with mtty in your current state, if so you can flash any rom, since it bypasses the carrier check.
