Re: Garmin GPS.......

SO, I've been having trouble getting maps to work, but I have found an at least temporary solution.

First: This is meant to be used if you have your own maps!!!!! I purchased some Garmin maps about 1.5 years ago for my gps and used one of the 2 unlock codes.

Get Garmin's Mobile XT software. Grab it from the Updates section of Garmin's site. It's listed as Aditional Software. Then Under Garmin Mobile XT The 4.20.30 works for me.
EDIT: Apparently, .30w has a bunch of bugs. I may have seen a few but, .20 is also only available in a cracked form.

At the bottom of the page are help files and maps grab them if you want. The maps are the basic non-detailed ones. We'll be using our own maps.

First, I'm using the City Navigator v8 non-NT (same but compressed) maps. I imagine the MetroGuide (cheaper but less detailed version) would work.

At this time you need a PC as Garmin's Bobcat software for the Mac doesn't yet support loading at the maps the same way. Or I can't get it to work on mine. If you want to test with bobcat YOU WILL NEED TO USE A CARD READER.

I recommend using a card reader anyway as it's faster.

Open the map source app on the PC and select the little yellow polygon thing. Then select all the sections you want. I selected the contiguous 48 states and it came in at a little over a gig for the non compressed maps. The whole North Am clocks in at about 1.3GB. However once sent to the phone the size appears to be a bit more.

Load the card into the phone and fire up Mobile XT. Then click trial. This should at least work for 2 weeks will need to wait and see.

I'd like to use Garmin's unlock process to do it. I'm not sure how it will quite work. I may email customer support (they've been helpful before!) and see how that goes. In the meantime I hope this helped.

Also to the OP, would you mind editing the first post to include the numbers or links of this post and some of the others. It would be really helpful for 'noobs' and would save a lot of time going thought 21+ pages.
