I installed JD's Alltell / Sprint WM 6.1 Rom yesterday. I can confirm that OUT OF THE BOX the GPS works!!
All you have to do is install Google Maps, run it after the install then click Menu -> Use GPS. Now you just have to wait.
After I had a lock on a few satellites (took about 5 minutes or so), I fired up Tom Tom, set it to Com 4 and I used Tom Tom to navigate me home
