It is possible as shown from the threads on this post but I would still say that most people would recommend the XP and ActiveSync 4.5 for reliability's sake in flashing a ROM. I doubt if you could brick the phone because most issues involve the updater (RUU) so the ROM should never reach the phone. You may get stuck in bootloader mode, though. See those threads.
If yiou don't have access to an XP machine, I guess you have no choice....
