I just registered here to say...
I am SO FED UP with the WM5 that came on my Sprint PPC-6700. I did a full reload on it using its built-in recovery "partition" (I guess) and since I don't have any intention of using it for a cell phone (no service on it, only a Pocket PC), I aborted the carrier setup routine. Then I was left with a clean, sleek, and somewhat functional PPC-6700. That's why I now call it a Generic PPC-6700.
It sure would be nice to be able to completely remove all traces of a cellular radio from my PPC though. That's why I grabbed the Generic image from here to load on it! Holy crap, I can't believe this actually exists and I didn't know about it! So I'm backing up my data and downloading the image now. I can't wait to give it a try. I CAN'T WAIT!
Eat that, Micro$oft. Maybe if you had actually sold this, I wouldn't have to be getting it for free. I even learned about the availability of third party OS upgrades through a MS Windows Mobile developer blog (talking about how EVIL they are). Hah!
Long story short, I have the distinct feeling that this is going to be a lifesaver. THANKS! If it works, expect whatever donations I can come up with
edit: Okay, so the upgrade went perfect (it now starts up with an HTC logo instead of a Sprint logo! YAY!), but after the incredibly long startup process, then the first run wizard, I was still left with the "Will now run customizations in 3 seconds..." message INSTALLING SPRINT CRAP! Gaaahhhh... *headdesk* Isn't there some clean way to be rid of that garbage from the core OS ROM? I installed "generic" for a reason - to be completely rid of all cellular related functions!
