Since I had never had a claim in 2 years at that point, the cost of maintaining insurance at $7 per month for those two years was $168 - equal to or higher than the Ebay/secondhand price of any of the phones I was using at the time. Now, 4 years later, I have never had a claim, and I'm glad I haven't paid the $336 for insurance ($7 a month for 48 months) because the money I pocketed could go for an Ebay XV6700 which I see all the time for about $200. In fact I was considering buying a spare at that price "just in case" as I was building a custom ROM.

The economics of insurance only make sense to me if it's a brand new model, very hard to obtain, and very expensive (the last part is relative to one's situation). If I were using a 6700 in high school, I'd have insurance on it. High school being a distant memory for me, the economics are a little different.

Car insurance is a tricky analogy because there are issues like liability and medical expenses that make it an unfair comparison. If there were a constant threat that I could kill someone and be sued for millions just by carrying a 6700 in my pocket (I mean it's a brick, but not *that* much of a brick), you bet I'd insure it.

My answer to this poll would have to be "it depends", so I can't issue a flat-out 'no'.
car insurance is all i could think of at the moment. this is the deal, i own a ppc 6700 and my wife owns the treo 700p, we have them insured because she is in school and I am the sole provider as of now and we like our phones and cannot afford to pay one lump sum for a new phone when we can pay $14.00 a month knowing they are covered. I am in the uscg and am constantly working near the water and I have seen about a dozen phones fall into the water in a years time. most had insurance, but for those that did'nt, i heard them complaining of the price it cost them to obtain a new phone. i dunno if they went through ebay or went to the cell store or what, all I know is that I would rather pay $14.00 a month on about $1000 worth of phones then have to buy them outright. i wont ever go back to some rinky dinky phone again after experiencing the 6700. therefore i will pay the cost of insurance the rest of my life even if i never have to use it, i know it is there and it is a sense of security. eventually a persons luck will run out.
