I'd say go with a WP7 device. Either the Arrive or one of the Mango devices that will be coming.
I really think it's the wave of the future. You could go with Android now because you say you want to mod and tinker but I can see you ending up with a WP device. Who's to say that you couldn't end up being a developer for WP and make some cool keyboards and taskbars.
