This is my first android phone so i'm not entirely sure what this means. I haven't rooted or done anything like that, so could it be some program i've installed? I'm about ready to completely wipe the phone and start over, but wanted to know if there was some way I could troubleshoot the issue.
Freeze up could be related to poor signal. The phone searching for and obtaining a connection takes priority over everything else. Try going into Settings/Wireless & networks/Mobile networks and set Network Mode to Automatic.

Also a rogue app app or widget could be stuck on a data sync. Disable any apps or widgets from syncing data temporarily.

A force close issue could be related to a corrupt file, or an app or widget not working correctly.

It might be time to do a Factory Data Reset to dump phone memory. Your Calendar, Contacts, Emails and purchased Market apps will be maintained on Google for reloading.....
