So it may be a little rough early on, but you definitely will get there..with such powerful hardware and Android OS, generally stock is decent..and custom roms is just pure benefit.

you are right about it taking time to build a collection of ROMs and Devs, BUT, we are comparing apples to oranges here. The Evo 3D was a HUGE deal for sprint (even tho euro carriers are getting it too) with a better marketing campaign, and the photon kinda flew under the radar... Plus, the Photon is Sprints first Moto device and people are scared to try something new, when they loved their OG Evo so much. My uncle, original Evo owner, is an average user and returned the Photon after 1 day because he hated it so much, now he has the 3D and loves it like no other. Hands down the 3D is the bigger seller because Sense is just what people are used to now, and my god do A LOT of people stand by Sense like its the best thing since sliced bread (i am not one of them, i prefer closer to AOSP).
HTC reminds me of Volvo cars. They are the safest cars around, well built and last a long time, and usually, once a volvo owner, always a volvo owner. But for the price, if you sacrifice having the "safest car", you can get a car way cooler with better features/options (ie Infinity or BMW). Some people just don't like change tho.
i'm super excited to see Yay4Juggs and Calk deving for the photon tho. When it comes down to it, i'd rather have a few big names on the dev team rather than dozens of "ok" devs. I've dramatically slowed down my "rom-testing" flashaholic ways lately and have been sticking with the big named devs and stablest ROMs.
