I think this is something a lot of people forget or don't know about. It took me a while to figure it out.
good point...I'll add to OP

if you flash ANY 2.08 ROM you should update the firmware, just make sure it's the modified version w/o the new hboot

PG86IMG_2.08.651.2_firmware_nohboot.zip

rename to PG86IMG.zip, flash from bootloader
