Mine did that defective light BS too.  Try this.
 
Go on to sprint.com and login to you account. Click on your airrave and make sure the zipcode is correctly set.  Then power cycle the unit and leave it for like a day and hook the gps sensor up and put it by a window for good measure.   If it still doesnt work, call tech support and make sure u talk to someone who knows something about the device.  
 
It will work, the ZIPcode thing is a big deal, and the device itself, IMO, is a piece of sh*t; good luck.
