That app should only be necessary if you use WEP - which is a horribly outdated and insecure protocol, if you have any say in the matter
CHANGE IT!! Use WPA or WPA2... Much more secure (although nothing is bullet-proof, it's just about blocking the script kiddies which unless you're gov't 99.9% will be...)

Well, don't do that. Don't mix & match kernels w/modules, why did you think that would work? I hope someone didn't tell you to do that, because it's certainly wrong.
