Well you definitely need to remove the SIM until you have a system image that has the correct frameworks changes to support switching modes...

If you get F22's rootfs with hyc RIL support, I don't think the rootnew changes would be required... I'll have to verify that to be sure, but I'm pretty sure that's not required.

Search for providers is a GSM-only thing AFAIK...
