Thanks, good info on the original link. After fooling with this for a day or two with a new ROM seems I cannot get it over the speed I had with the previous old script-based set-up. So I assume my limitation is the quality of my chip and this app is doing about as good as it can.
Remarkable as there is still a development pipeline for these apps, but shows the reticence people have over the iPhone and Android.
