"NAND" is the internal storage of your device, not to be confused with the SD card or anything. When you have a ROM on your phone and you do a "NAND backup" it takes your current ROM and backs up everything including your apps, settings, etc... so that if you flash another ROM and don't like it or it doesn't boot or work you can restore the NAND backup thru recovery.

So basically yes it's the same thing.
