Here's a link to the GSM FAQ, good battery tips in there. I have not updated to the latest ROM yet, but have never had the battery problems you're experiencing & have never done any special tricks.

Are you really on Alltel, or are you on Verizon? I'm using an Alltel TP on Verizon & the last Verizon radio works much better for me than any other.
