I do not use data (I am on a pay as you go plan) but I turned it on downloaded weather data and it worked properly. Were you able to make calls? If so, was WiFi working? Hope you can figure out the issue. I assume the data was working properly with the Stock ROM. It might just be a settings issue.
The settings on my phone are as follows:
Start > Settings > Connections > Tasks > Manage existing connections
Name = Verizon Wireless, Number = #777,
Username, Password and Domain are empty
You do not need to relock the phone after flashing back to stock. Hope you can unlock it again!
