I was able to gain root on my alltel hero with superoneclick found here [APP]SuperOneClick v1.7 (Root, Unroot, Enable Non-Market App) - xda-developers though I used an older version than is posted now

I also had trouble gaining root on another alltel hero and superoneclick didn't work nor did z4root the only way I was able to get it was with this One click Root APK for CDMA Hero - xda-developers
