sorry to thread resurrect, but I found this after searching and wanted to share my solution/issue with anyone else trying to figure it out. This is even more important now that sprint will charge you more if you do an esn swap.

I figured out that I could get my phone out of sleep (turn screen on) when I had the keyboard open and the screen tilted back (away from you) and I hit the power button on.

It's definitely a short in the light sensor somewhere. You can prove this if you install Lumos. When you configure Lumos, if you see a light reading of zero and then open the keyboard, you can make the sensor work and broken again if you flex the keyboard/screen chassis.
