Here's what you can do just to keep it simple. Use the One-Click Root w/Clockwork 2.5.5. Then go here:

Read all the way through the first post. This kernel should give you a more speed and better battery life, plus it fixes a few of the bugs that stock EB13 has. Download the kernel to your SD card and then use Clockworkmod to flash it. Kernels flash in about 10 seconds. MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU DO THIS! In fact, you should back up everything before you flash anything.

Then spend some time researching the various custom ROMs out there. The best thing about them is that the devs remove a lot of the crap that Sprint puts on there, which saves memory and speeds up everything else.
