Well, it kinda depends on your device. If your TP2 is Sprint-branded, it's a RHOD400. In which case, you can simply update to 1258 and get the added battery life benefits.
Basically we were never collapsing the panel in the kernel, we would just take the brightness down to 0 - so it would appear off, when in fact it's still drawing power.
Another
huge issue with battery life comes down to something very simple - the phone sleeping or not! If you don't get that green LED that stays (fairly) solid, the phone isn't sleeping. Just having GPS enabled in Location & Security (not even if it's being used, just enabled) will kill sleep. Disable GPS, and the phone should sleep. The other most popular culprit for failed sleep is a rogue application that doesn't want to respect the system asking it to sleep. Kinda a crap shoot on this one, but SystemPanel Lite can help with determining which app is doing the dirty deed.
I also have a test kernel thread, but the main panel collapse/wake code has been committed already, so you don't have to run a test kernel if you don't want to. The more reports on that the merrier, but I understand why not everyone wants to test
