I usually do this before I boot to Android so that if I had added a contact, added a calendar event, etc, recently it'll update my google account so that when I'm in Android, it will sync those updates.

Also I forgot to mention that the first time you set up ActiveSync, it may not "automatically" sync immediately (not sure why, maybe's it's waiting for a change event on your google account before it syncs); I usually force the sync and it works then. This is what you may have experienced when you first set it up.
So you are able to sync calendar stuff too? Arrrghhh mentioned that sometimes causes problems... maybe I'll see if I can get it to sync now that it's done it successfully once.
