You should probably be saying "you can't flash to
un-signed roms" If I understand everything correctly (and I think I do) if you are using the leaked Sprint 3.16 ROM, it is signed and therefore should not need the unlocker on a Sprint phone.
On my Verizon phone, I used the Olipro 2.4 and it worked like a charm. Didn't try w/o it so can't say for sure.
